The town of Pofadder was founded in 1875 at the site of a perennial spring.
It is reportedly named after Klaas Pofadder who was a Korana chief and had his headquarters in the town. He was shot by local farmers after being accused of rustling cattle. Some say that the town is named after the Pofadder snake which is common in the area.
Pofadder is a small town and is situated in a dry and sparsely populated area.
