Panorama of Garies
Northern Cape
The little village of Garies gets its name from the Garies River on which it is sited. The word "garies" is a corruption of the Khoikhoi word "xharies" which is there name for a species of grass found in the river valley. The Garies River later becomes the Groen River before it flows into the sea.
Garies is located in an arrea of rugged granite hills. These hills are part of a range known as the Kamiesberg. The main attraction in the area is the spring wild-flowers.
Kaolin, which used in the manufacture of porcelain, is quarried in the area.
