Violeteared Waxbill
Afrikaans name: Koningblousysie
Granatina granatina
The Violet-eared Waxbill is a beautiful little bird. It is found in the northern region of South Africa through to Angola and Zambia.
It is found in a variety of habitats where there is a mix of bushes and open spaces.
This is predominantly a seed-eating species but they do also eat some fruit and insects.
Male and female Violet-eared Waxbill pair for life.
They make their nest in either a tree or shrub and the female lays between two and seven eggs.
Violet-eared Waxbills are a popular bird for aviaries and this may have an effect on their population in the wild in the future.
