The little town of Hanover was proclaimed in 1854 and is named after the somewhat larger city in Germany. Some people say that Hanover is the most central point in South Africa.

Although a lot of Hanover's business centred around it being centrally located and thus a convenient stopping point, today it is better known for the farming of Merino Sheep.

There are two interesting features in the town. Firstly, there is a spring which supplies 205,000 litres of water to the town each day. There is also a small hill, called Trappieskop, and one can walk up a path to the top where you get an excellent view of the town and surrounding area.

A famous resident of the town is Olive Schreiner who lived here between 1900 and 1907. She is well-known as both an author and for her human rights campaigns.
