Vorstershoop, North West town

Afrikaans name: Vorstershoop

Vorstershoop is a small village near the Molopo Game Reserve in the North West province of South Africa. The village has a “mall” but it is not what you expect and you are advised to take everything that you need with you when travelling in this area.

The ramshackle village is occupied by around 300 people, most of whom live in shacks. Those people that do have jobs work on the surrounding farms but there are also a lot of unemployed people. Poverty is rife and most people do not have access to electricity or clean water.

The area around Vorstershoop is semi-arid. Summers can be hot, but it can get very cold at night in winter.

If you look at a map of the North West province you will notice that Vorstershoop sits in the middle of a blank piece of paper! It is located on the R375 with the nearest other villages being Terra Firma to the north-east and Saron to the south-west.
