Northern Cape
Richmond was founded in 1843 to serve the needs of the farmers in the surrounding area. The town is situated in the Karoo which is a very arid area. The N1 highway passes nearby the town.
The town was to be named after Sir Peregrine Maitland, Governor of the Cape, but he refused the honour and insisted that it be called Richmond to honour his father-in-law who was Duke of Richmond. There is also a town named Richmond in KwaZulu-Natal.
Richmond still survives to support the farmers in the area although it does attract a number of tourists as well.
