The Matambeni Bird Hide is a great place to spend some time when staying at Letaba Camp or visiting that area in Kruger National Park. It is located on the northern bank of the Letaba River which, at that point, is part of the Engelhard Dam.
The hide is reached by taking the S62 gravel road from the H1-6 tar road just north of where the tar road crosses the Letaba River. Besides a visit to this hide I find it is worthwhile driving the various loops and side roads all the way to the end of the road at Longwe Lookout.
Although the hide is called a bird hide there are often mammals to be seen as well. Look for Hippo, Elephant, Klipspringer, Waterbuck and more. You will normally see a number of waterbirds in the area such as Plovers, Storks, Herons and Egrets. Look for other birds, such as Bee-eaters, in the surrounding bushes.
