Grootvlei Pass is on the P2945 regional road which connects towns such as Kamieskroon, on the inland plateau, with those along the coastal belt such as Hondeklipbaai. If you are travelling towards the coast you will encounter Killian's Pass further down the road.
The pass is very steep in parts but, even though it is a gravel road, it is normally passable by all vehicles. Some vehicles may struggle a bit after winter rains.
This short pass is only around 4 km in length and during that time drops 277 metres. In parts the gradient is 1:5.
Grootvlei Pass is located in Namaqualand which gives you a big clue as to when is the best time to visit. Yes, it is when the spring flowers are in bloom. In August and September each year the otherwise barren landscape because covered with colourful flowers.
Beautiful view from the pass
