What’s not to love about “Shrikes of Southern Africa” by Tony Harris and Graeme Arnott. This is a collectable book that will probably be the most authorative book on Shrikes for some time to come. It is a class in the making.

Having said that there is some controversy on exactly what is a shrike and what is not a shrike. Are the Batises Shrikes? Many people don’t think so. But why stress about this scientific problem? It is like they are a bonus section included free. I wouldn’t suggest that you return your copy of this beautiful publication because you have a dispute with the author.

The book comes with an attractive slipcase and has a feel of good quality about it. Tony Harris has done a great job on the text, but I must admit that I am always drawn to the illustrations when I look at it. The artwork is amazing. The various sketches and colour plates by Graeme Arnott are littered throughout the book.

My advice – buy it – you won’t be disappointed.
