The Wildebeest's Review of Birds of Prey of the World

The Wildebeest reviewing a book

Author Friedhelm Weick is a bird artist who specialises in birds of prey including owls. He has illustrated a number of other bird books as well. For this book he teams up with Leslie Brown who is probably the most well-known authority on birds of prey.

Weick spent a lot of time in the field and in zoos making sketches of birds of prey. The 1,144 paintings are the result of this research and observations. This book is all about the paintings but there is some text giving key information for each species. Unfortunately, the text is minute and is a challenge to read. On plate 24 there are around 35 illustrations, and the matching text needs to be condensed to fit on one page. A lot of the text is in English and German which compounds the problem.

The first 62 pages of the book features an identification key and other information accompanied by line drawings.

Even with the tiny text descriptions for the colour plates I really love this book and it is a must-have for lovers of birds of prey.
