The Wildebeest's Review of "African Wildlife - Vol 36 No 4&5"
In 1982 one of the hot conservation topics was the sudden cessation of the Ingwavuma area to Eswatini (Swaziland back then). The government of the time passed this controversial agreement without consultation with conservationists or the South African people. Fortunately, after a court challenge, the idea was scrapped. This plan would have deprived local residents of their South African citizenship as well as depriving our country of such important conservation areas as Ndumu Game Reserve, Kosi Bay and more.
There is an interesting article on Raffia Palms. The leaves on these palms are reported to be the longest in the world. Birders will be aware that Raffia Palms are the place to go and look for the Palm-nut Vulture. The article on the coral reefs of Maputaland is accompanied by colour photos of some of the residents of this fascinating area. Other articles include one on the Elephants of Maputaland, the Birds of Ndumu Game Reserve and Kosi Bay.
Overall, another interesting and informative issue of this great magazine.
