The Wildebeest's Review of "African Wildlife - Vol 38 No 2"

The Wildebeest reviewing a book

The cover of this issue of African Wildlife features a montage of some of the covers of the magazine published between 1946 and 1984. This successfully highlights the diverse subjects that the African Wildlife magazine has featured over the years.

Inside the magazine you find that each decade has been featured with some of the highlights of that era. The section on the 1940’s features many of the pioneering figures in conservation such as President Kruger. The 1950’s saw the introduction of an Afrikaans version of the magazine. There was a tribute to Lieutenant-Colonel James Stevenson-Hamilton who passed away in 1957. Besides President Kruger Stevenson-Hamilton is the name most often associated with Kruger National Park. The 1960’s saw a bigger focus on conservation issues and projects. It is particularly interesting to see the letter from the late Prince Philip congratulating African Wildlife on their initiatives. Highlights from the 1970’s features articles on a wide variety of topics from plans to put a freeway through the Wild Coast to a Hippo trying to rescue an Impala that had been taken by a crocodile.

Sometimes it is good to look back and see what the issues of the day were and so this edition of African Wildlife proved to be fascinating.
