The Wildebeest's Review of "African Wildlife - Vol 38 No 6"

The Wildebeest reviewing a book

A close-up photo of a yellow and black grasshopper graces the cover of this issue of African Wildlife. Glancing through the contents I notice a couple of articles about African Rock Pythons, Southern Right Whales, Fynbos, traditional medicines, Reedbuck and more.

The magazine starts with all the boring stuff such as Presidents reports, financial reports and others, so you have to skip quite a few pages before you get to something interesting to read.

The first article of note is titled “Pythons and people: predators and prey.” These large snakes are often targeted and killed unnecessarily. They rarely attack humans although there is an article about a python that attacked a 15-year-old boy who bit it to death in self-defence. You can’t make this stuff up!

Apparently, Natal has a Reedbuck problem. I have heard of predators causing problems for farmers but Reedbuck. The Common Reedbuck are eating the rye-grass crops which provide sustenance for stock over winter. Of course, the Reedbuck also see the rye-grass as a source of nutrition.

As usual there are plenty of good images in the magazine including some award-winning images from the National Wildlife Salon.
