The Wildebeest's Review of "African Wildlife - Vol 42 No 3"
This issue of African Wildlife has a great photo of two Dusky Dolphins leaping out of a rather calm looking ocean. The contents page lists some interesting sounding articles such as “Rodents, rodents everywhere” and “The Red Bishop: Polygyny and a Good Life Expectancy.”
The article on rodents is an interesting one accompanied by some nice photos. We are all familiar with this group of mammals and most of us have a negative impression to them. Apparently, there are 78 species of rodent found in southern Africa while Britain has only 14.
Anyone familiar with the beaches of the Western Cape will be familiar with the large pieces of kelp that get washed ashore. These can be unsightly but the article “The Kelp connection” explains the role that the dead kelp plays in the beach ecosystem.
Did you know that a Red Bishop can live for up to 10 years? The article on Red Bishops and their lifestyle reveals some fascinating information on these well-known birds.
As usual this edition of African Wildlife is packed with information. Some articles are repeated in English and Afrikaans which may annoy some readers, but it does help to accommodate some of the language diversity in our country.
