The Wildebeest's Review of "Caravan and Outdoor Life - Issue 653"
I am settling down with a mug of hot coffee and a copy of the August 2016 edition of Caravan and Outdoor Life magazine. What is that to look forward to? Articles on a three-month trip to Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania as well as a 2,000 km “berg and beer” tour. Sounds interesting.
First up is part 1 of an East vs West trip which basically involves using two different Toyotas to explore the eastern and western halves of South Africa. The focus in part 1 is the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. A Imagine Comfortvan was the portable accommodation for this trip, and it proved to be a good choice. I now see where the beers and berg, that were mentioned on the cover, come in. The tow car for this portion of the trip was a Toyota Fortuner 2.8 GD-6 RB 6MT which turned out to be a great choice.
Gravel roads can inflict a lot of damage to your caravan so naturally manufacturers offer models with some degree of protection and robustness. A Sprite Tourer SP caravan was taken for a test trip. How did it fare? The caravan itself appears to be well-equipped and comfortable and apparently an “absolute pleasure” to tow. So, did it cope with the roads? It did to a large extent. It is not meant to go fully off-road, and one should stick to tar of gravel roads. It did not handle heavily corrugated roads so care should be taken when encountering one.
