Northern Cape

Upington is a large town situated on the banks of the Orange River in the Northern Cape.

The town was founded in 1884 and was originally called Olyfenhoudtsdrif. It was named Upington after Sir Upington who was Prime Minister of the Cape between 1884 and 1886.

The surrounding countryside is arid but the land along the Orange River is very fertile and a lot of fruit is grown here.

Upington is the nearest major town to the Augrabies Falls and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
