The Wildebeest's Review of Book of the Road

Firstly, I must admit that, at time of writing this review, this atlas is the map book that this Wildebeest uses to find its way around South Africa. None of this electronic nonsense!

The bulk of the book consists of over 70 pages of detailed maps that include accommodation and points of interest in the areas. After that there are 208 street plans of towns and cities across the country. These tend to be focus on the CBD areas of each location, but they are somewhat useful in that they show many useful points such as museums, railway stations, medical facilities, churches and much more. I will admit that for navigation around these towns an electronic device is the answer.

An interesting addition to the book is the “strip route maps” which present popular routes in a straight line with the main towns and turn-offs shown. These are useful and it would have been great if there were more of them. For those who navigate by GPS there are 2 maps showing GPS waypoints for towns and cities around South Africa. Lastly there is a comprehensive index.

Overall, this is a useful guide to the roads and attractions in South Africa. I not only use it in the car when I am travelling, I also use it to plan trips.
