Greytown

Greytown is situated on the Mvoti River about 75 km north of Pietermaritzburg.

The first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, General Louis Botha, was born on a farm nearby. A memorial marks his birthplace.

The town was established in 1850 and was named after Sir George Grey who was Governor of the Cape Colony.

Timber is one of the main products of the area and there are extensive plantations in the surrounding land. A number of other products are produced on the local farms including sugar, avocado pears, maize and beef.

The Greytown Museum is well worth a visit. It is located in a building that was erected in 1886.

Another point of interest in the area is Lake Merthley.
