North West

Vryburg is a town in the North West Province and is about 150 km north-east of Kuruman.

In the 1880's Vryburg became the capital of Stellaland Republic after skirmishes between the Tlapin and Korana. Boer mercenaries who fought alongside the Korana were given farms in the area.

The Vryburg area is a major producer of beef in South Africa. Other significant agricultural products include groundnuts and maize.

There is also some mining activity in the area.

When visiting or staying in the town make sure to visit the Leon Taljaard Nature Reserve. Some of the mammals to be seen there include White Rhino, Cape Buffalo, Eland, Waterbuck, Springbok and Black Wildebeest. A bit over 100 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve. There is also a small museum and memorial plaque in memory of the Boers that were executed by the British Army. The reserve is 856 ha in size. It is open daily.
