Thabazimbi is located at the foot of the YsterBerg which means "Iron Mountain". The town revolves around the mining and distribution of iron ore. In fact, over 2 million tonnes of iron ore leave the town each year. The town was only proclaimed in 1953 even though the large iron deposits had already been found in 1919 and mining activities had been taking place for some time.

The surrounding area has many livestock, mainly for beef production. There are also a number of game ranches and reserves.

Some of the nearby places of interest for visitors include Ben Alberts Nature Reserve, Marakele National Park and Rhino Bushveld Eco Park. Besides game viewing popular activities include hunting and hiking.

Visitors to Thabazimbi will easily find a place to their liking that suits their budget.
