'Vrede' is the Afrikaans word for 'peace' and the town gets its name from the peace that arose after a disagreement over the location of the town was settled. Vrede was proclaimed as a town in 1879.

The surrounding farmlands produce a wide variety of agricultural products including maize, beef, dairy, poultry, wool, mutton and wheat.

Vrede is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of modern city life. Visitors enjoy the small restaurants and pubs and can visit craft shops. The enormous grain silos and Dutch Reformed Church dominate the landscape. There is a memorial to Boers who lost their lives in battle and a monument to the Great Trek.

Lovers of the outdoors can enjoy a round of golf, or go on hikes or mountain bike rides. The Vrede Dam is nearby.
