The small town of Calitzdorp is approximately 4 hours drive away from Cape Town. They call themselves the 'Gateway to the Garden Route' and there are certainly plenty of attractions nearby.

The village of Calitzdorp was founded in the 1830's on farmland that had been granted to the Calitz family and was named after them.

The town is close to three mountain ranges including the Swartberg and Rooiberge. These mountains influence the climate in the town. During summer it is very hot and you can expect very cold nights in winter.

Calitzdorp will appeal to outdoor enthusiasts as it offers birding, fishing, 4x4 routes, hiking, canoeing and much more. The area has a diverse and unique plant life with over 500 species of succulents having been identified in the area.

If you love drinking Port then welcome to the 'Port Capital of South Africa'. There are 7 wineries producing award winning Ports in the area.
