The Wildebeest's Review of Places to Visit in Southern Africa

There have been many similar publications since “Places to Visit in Southern Africa” was published in 1995. One thing that stands out for me, as I review this book nearly 20 years later is that when the AA, or Reader’s Digest for that matter, tackle a project they go big, and this book is a good example of that.

It is a big book with over 450 pages that are packed with information, photographs, and maps. It contains write-ups of hundreds of towns, cities, and places of interest across South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, it does not include Mozambique. The places are grouped by province for South Africa and by country for the rest.

If you can get hold of a copy of this book at a flea market or elsewhere, I think that it will prove useful to you. It can be taken with on your next vacation or can be used to browse through to find new places that you haven’t yet been to. It is well laid out and beautifully illustrated. Understandably a lot of place names changed and places to stay come and go but the bulk of the information remains very useful.
