The small village of Rhodes is situated on the Bell River in the Eastern Cape. The river is a well-known trout fishing destination which attracts people to Rhodes.
In winter the Rhodes Trail Run is held. This is a strenuous 52 km race that starts and ends in the village. In spring mountain bikers are drawn to the area for the 82 km Rhodes Mountain Bike Challenge. This is an arduous race that climbs the Naude's Neck pass, runs along the Lesotho border and returns to Rhodes via the Carlislehoekspruit Pass. The other main sporting event in the area is the annual Wild Trout Festival.
The village of Rhodes was proclaimed in 1897 and had a checquered history in its first few years. During the Second Boer War it was invaded 29 times!
