North West

The Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve is located in the North West province of South Africa. The Bloemhof Dam separates this nature reserve from the Sandveld Nature Reserve which is on the Free State side of the dam.

The nature reserve is 12,000 hectares in extent. The land is mainly covered in thornveld and the reserve is accessible by all types of car except in the wetest periods.

The reserve is home to a wide variety of mammals including Springbok, Eland, Gemsbok and Black Wildebeest.

Birders will not be disappointed as over 250 species have been recorded in the reserve. The dam attracts huge concentrations of water birds at times. These include large flocks of Greater and Lesser Flamingos. In the thornveld areas look for White-backed Vulture, Cape Vulture, Kori Bustard, Red-crested Korhaan, Crimson-breasted Shrike, Pririt Batis and Sociable Weaver.

The dam itself is one of the most popular inland fishing venues in South Africa. There are a variety of accommodation option available.
