Sterkfontein Dam is located on Nuwejaarspruit which is a tributary of the Wilge River. The dam is a key part of the Tugela-Vaal Water Project which diverts water from KwaZulu-Natal to the Vaal River system. This helps provide the residents of Johannesburg with water.

Work began on the dam in 1969 and it took 8 years to complete. Initially the dam wall was 69 metres high but it was raised to 93 metres in 1980. The capacity of the dam is 2,616,950 cubic metres which makes it the third largest dam in South Africa.

Accommodation at the dam includes chalets and a camping area. You can also stay at Harrismith and make a day visit to the dam.

Sterkfontein Dam is a popular fishing destination. It is said to be the best spot in South Africa to fish for Yellowfish. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded in the area.
