North West

In 1838 the Voortrekkers settled in the area of the modern-day city of Potchefstroom. It has played a major part in South African history since then but is today better known for it being home to the Potchefstroom campus of the North West University.

The North West University has 3 campuses - Potchefstroom, Mafikeng and Vanderbijlpark. The university has 32,000 students.

There are many historical sites in the city including the Old Fort and Cemetery and the South African National Artillery Memorial, both of which are National Heritage Sites. Other notable buildings include WD Pretorius House, MW Pretorius House, Berlin Missionary Complex, St. Mary's Anglican Church and many others that date back to the 1800's.

Other places of interest when visiting Potchefstroom include the OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary, Dome Bergland Nature Park, Buffelsvlei Wild Animal Park and Boskop Dam Nature Reserve.

What is there to do in and around Potchefstroom?
