One of the benefits, or disadvantages, of Shingwedzi Camp, in Kruger National Park, is that it is quite remote. This means that it does not have some of the congestion on the roads that can happen in the southern half of the park, but it does take a lot longer to get to, so you need to plan your stopovers carefully.

Shingwedzi Camp is situated on the Shingwedzi River, a few kilometres upstream from Kanniedood Dam. The drive along the river is one of the best in the park, particularly for birders.

The camp has a variety of accommodation options ranging from a lodge to campsites. The camp has a restaurant, petrol station, shop, laundry and other facilities.

Game-viewing is rewarding in the area, particularly during the winter months. Look for Wild Dog, Elephant, Hippo, Leopard, Bushbuck, Spotted Hyena and much more. The Shingwedzi area has a reputation for large herds of Elephant and Buffalo.

Birders will really enjoy the area, but they should come during the summer months, which are very hot, but the migrant species are around. Some of the specials recorded in the area include Bat Hawk, Collared Palm Thrush, European Hobby, Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, Bennett’s Woodpecker and Yellow-billed Oxpecker. Numerous species of waterbirds will be seen along the shoreline of Kanniedood Dam.
