Northern Cape
The harbour town of Port Nolloth was named after Commander Nolloth of the Royal Navy who surveyed the area in 1854.
Originally the port was important in the handling of copper but nowadays it serves the lobster fishing industry and reclaiming diamonds from the sea bed, although this activity has declined dramatically over the years.
The harbour is now closed to bigger ships. Over the years a couple of ships have got shipwrecked trying to make the tricky entrance into the harbour.
