In 1876 the Leask brothers opened a store at what was to become Wolmaranstad. Wolmaransstad was then proclaimed as a town in 1891 after it was founded in 1888 on the farms known as Rooderand and Vlakfontein.

The town sits on the banks of the Makwasi River and is surrounded by many maize farms. Other farming activities include cattle, groundnuts and sorghum. The area also has significant alluvial diamond mines.

There are a number of places with visiting, in the Wolmaransstad area, including Wolwespruit Nature Reserve, the Diggers Diamond Route and Broadbent Mission Station.

The Makwassierante Conservation Area offers plenty of hiking routes and game-viewing opportunities.
