Up until 1995 Centurion was known as Verwoerdburg. With changes in the political landscape, and the ending of the apartheid era, a more suitable name was sort and so it was that residents chose the name Centurion.
Centurion is a sprawling, predominantly residential, area with many residents commuting to Pretoria or Johannesburg for work. New town-house complexes are being developed at a rapid rate. The city is linked to the other cities by a network of freeways and the Gautrain.
The South African Air Force has two bases in the area. These are Waterkloof Air Force Base and Swartkop Air Force Base. Airshows held at Waterkloof are extremely popular events.
Centurion has a wide variety of accommodation available ranging from luxury hotels to Bed and Breakfast establishments.
Places of interest near Centurion include Rietvlei Game Reserve, Groenkloof Nature Reserve, Zwartkops Resort and the Voortrekker Monument.
