Gauteng Province
Afrikaans name: Gauteng provinsie
Gauteng is the financial heart of South Africa and is the most heavily populated province in South Africa and houses South Africa’s biggest city Johannesburg.
Despite the region being very built up there are a number of smaller nature reserves and botanical gardens. One, not so small, game reserve in Gauteng is Rietvlei which is situated near Irene. This reserve is well-stocked with a variety of mammals including Cheetah, Cape Buffalo and White Rhino. The variety of habitats present in the reserve also makes for good birding.
Johannesburg and Pretoria are packed with tourist attractions such as casinos, zoos, theme parks, shopping malls and many others. One of the major attractions in the province is the magnificent Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. Besides its historical and cultural significance, it is sited on a hill and offers great views of the city in all directions. Gauteng is a great place for a visit to the country as it has so many attractions packed into a relatively small area.
