Dunnottar is a small settlement on the outskirts of Nigel in Gauteng province. I can’t find information on the origin of the village’s name, but it must surely have a connection with Dunnottar Castle in Scotland.
Dunnottar Castle dates back to medieval times when it played a significant role in Scotland’s history. It is sited in north-eastern Scotland on a rocky headland jutting into the sea. Unfortunately, today the remains of this castle are nothing like how it looked in its heyday.
There are a number of birding spots in the surrounding area including Marievale Bird Sanctuary.
The Dunnottar Airforce Base operated as a training school between 1946 and 1991 using Harvard aircraft. One of those Harvard’s is mounted as a static monument in the area.
