Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve is located about 25 km from Pretoria. The dam was constructed in 1956 and was originally named Pienaar's River Dam.

The dam is used to help supply Pretoria with water but it is also a popular spot for boating and angling.

The nature reserve is located on the eastern shores of the dam. It has a simple network of roads including a loop road and a road linking the entrance gate with the picnic spots at the waters edge. Visitors may also walk along well-signposted trails.

The reserve is popular with birders as it features a variety of habitats. Amongst the mammals that you may encounter are Burchell's Zebra, Kudu, Waterbuck, Warthog, Impala and Vervet Monkey.

There is a large picnic area located on the shore of the dam.

Please note that the Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve doesn't allow boating and angling. There are other access points on the opposite side of the dam for these activities.
