Ballito has, for many years, been a small holiday village. In recent years things have changed somewhat. Its popularity as a holiday destination has grown but a number of people from the Durban area have moved out there and a number of businesses have followed suit.

A number of shopping centres have sprung up to serve the residents and visitors.

The land on which Ballito now stands was part of a sugar cane farm. The origins of the town are from 1954.

In an attempt to attract investors the town was originally marketed as "The Caribbean of the North Coast".

The beaches are the main attraction in the Ballito area with the nearby Salt Rock and Shaka's Rock being particularly popular.
