Northern Cape
The town of Keimoes lies on the banks of the Orange River roughly halfway between Kakamas and Upington.
Like other towns that are located next to the mighty Orange River there is a lot of agriculture that takes place in the region using the water of the river to irrigate the fields. Various fruit crops are grown such as grapes, watermelon and peaches. Wine is also produced by the Orange River Wine Cellars.
The name "Keimoes" probably originates from the natural spring in the area which is known as "large eye" in the local indigenous languages.
Visitors can spend time at the nearby Tierberg Nature Reserve or visit the Dutch Reformed Church which was built in 1889 and is now a national monument. Another point of interest is the Persian Water Wheel which is still in operation. In spring there is normally an abundance of wildflowers in bloom which contrast with the aloes that flower in winter.
