The Wildebeest's Review of "Birding in Southern KwaZulu-Natal"

The Wildebeest reviewing a book

“Birding in Southern KwaZulu-Natal” is a small publication, but it is jam-packed with information. It features chapters on nine birding locations on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast which runs from Amazimtoti to the Transkei border.

Some of the sites that are described are Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve, Empisini Nature Reserve, Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, Mpenjati Public Resort and Nature Reserve and Umdoni Park. The locations included present a mix of forested area, grassland, cliffs, and water habitats.

An interesting addition to this book is the inclusion of a section of “birds in Zulu language and lore.” I really enjoyed reading this section and learnt a lot from it.

The book is illustrated in colour and includes a map for each location. At the back of the book is a useful section that lists all the birds that may be found in the nine locations and what their status is in those reserves.
