The January 2017 issue of Caravan and Outdoor Life will appeal to those Gauteng residents looking for a nearby place to spending a camping weekend. Dinokeng Game Reserve is close to Pretoria and features a wide range of mammals including the Big 5. Birders will also be happy to spend some time in the reserve.

Dinokeng does not only cater for camping enthusiasts. In fact, I would say that the reserve is aimed at the higher end of the market in terms of accommodation and facilities. It really is a mini Kruger National Park within easy reach of Gauteng residents and foreign tourists.

Another reserve that is popular with the people of Gauteng is Pilanesberg National Park in the North West province. It is much larger than Dinokeng and is well-stocked with animals including the Big 5. It too has a lot of high-end accommodation but camping at Manyane is, in my opinion, the best way to experience the reserve.
