Interesting facts about Bontebok

The Bontebok is an attractive antelope and is closely related to the Blesbok.

Both male and female Bontebok have horns but the horns of the males are thicker and longer.

They are found in Fynbos areas particularly where there is short grass.

Territorial males build up a herd of females during the breeding season. The other males form bachelor herds.

Bontebok were almost hunted to extinction. In 1931 the Bontebok National Park was proclaimed and numbers gradually recovered to a few thousand individuals.
