My family had a copy of Roberts Birds of South Africa for as long as I can remember but this was the start of my collection.

In 1981 I went on a bus trip into Kruger National Park for the day and, during a quick stop at Skukuza, I bought this book for a whopping R1.75. I still have the book and it brings back many memories.

This A5 softcover book had colour plates of mammals from hedgehogs to whales. It had short bilingual notes for each species and naturally the Afrikaans notes were first. The illustrations were done by H. Kumpf and are quite bold but were very helpful in identifying the mammals seen on my first visit to Kruger. I don't use this book anymore but I definitely wouldn't part with it!
