The Red-billed Teal may be seen quite commonly around dams and other bodies of freshwater. Their pinkish-red bill is unmistakable. The two-tone brown colouration on the head and the reddish bird make for an attractive bird.

This duck eats various plants which it finds both in and out of the water. It will also insects, worms, tadpoles, fish and other small animals if the opportunity arises.

The Red-billed Teal may be found over most of South Africa but it is always found near water. It will fly long distances should a water source dry up.

They make their nest amongst vegetation near, or fairly near, water. Up to 16 eggs may be laid.
