Lybius torquatus

The Black-collared Barbet is a common bird in the eastern and northern regions of South Africa. It is also found up to Kenya.

The face of the Black-collared Barbet is normally red but there are a few birds that show a yellow face (I would love to be able to photograph one! In fact, I have never seen one!).

Fruit forms the bulk of the diet of Black-collared Barbets but they will also eat nectar and insects.

They make a hole in a dead branch for their nest. Up to 5 eggs are laid and are attended to by both parents. Various honeyguides parasitise their nests.

The call of the Black-collared Barbet is actually a duet with two birds singing alternate notes. They do a log of wing-flicking while calling.
