Charadrius tricollaris
The Three-banded Plover is a common and widespread species of wading bird. It is found over most over most of the southern half of Africa as well as Ethiopia and Madagascar.
It is normally a solitary species which can be found on the edges of most bodies of water including dams, ponds, streams and reservoirs.
Adults grow up to 18 cm in length.
Male and female Three-banded Plover have the same colouration.
These Plovers feed on various aquatic and terrestrial insects, worms and crustaceans.
They are not gregarious when breeding. A pair will make their nest along the shore. Not much effort is put into the nest - it is normally a simple scrape on the ground or it may be on top of a rock. One or two eggs are laid.
