Wild Date Palm
Afrikaans name: Wildedadelboom
Wild Date Palm
Phoenix reclinata
The Wild Date Palm can grow to a height of 10 metres. It can often be found near water and normally grows in small clumps.
In South Africa it is found along the eastern region of the country from near Port Elizabeth through KwaZulu-Natal.
The leaves are long, slender and spiny. It gets clumps of small fruit which are up to about 2 cm in length.
The fruit is eaten by various animals including Elephants, Chacma Baboon and Vervet Monkeys. The caterpillars of the Palm-tree Nightfighter butterfly feed on the leaves.
