New Hanover is a small farming town situated halfway between Pietermaritzburg and Greytown. It is not far from Albert Falls Dam. The town is located on the Starkspruit River which winds its way through the region. It is often misty here and can vary in being hot in summer and quite cold in winter.
It was founded in 1850. The original German settlers named it after the German city of Hanover.
The surrounding farmlands produce a variety of crops including timber, fruit and grain, but sugarcane is the main one. Plantations are a feature of this area, whether its wattle or sugarcane, and are responsible for virtually all the economic activity.
There is not a lot of accommodation available near New Hanover, but one could also look at accommodation options at Albert Falls Dam or Greytown.
