This booklet has a special place in my heart. I was living in Durban at the time and was a beginner birdwatcher. I bought a copy of this book through the Natal Bird Club and off I went birding in interesting places, many of which I had never even heard of. Go forward a number of years and I had the privilege of being asked to expand and update this book and so “Where to watch birds in KwaZulu-Natal” was published.

The locations described in the book are grouped into chapters such as Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Natal Parks Board reserves and so on. Each location has information on habitat, best spots in the location, directions and, most importantly, some of the birds to look for. The birds mentioned include some more common species likely to be seen and some of the specials to search for.

Although this book was published some 40 years ago much of the text is still relevant. Yes, some place names have changed and, frustratingly, a lot of the bird names have changed but “Where to See Birds in Natal” is still a useful guide.
