Western Cape

Kommetjie is a small town of approximately 3000 residents that lies south of Cape Town. It is situated on the western side of the Cape Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean.

Surfing is a popular sport at Kommetjie as well as crayfishing. The shoreline is very rocky in parts and has large concentrations of kelp.

In 1990 a ship called Kakapo ran aground between Kommetjie and Noordhoek. The remains of the ship can still be seen today.

The local lighthouse is known as Slangkop lighthouse. This means 'snake hill' in English. Construction of the 33 metre tall lighthouse was delayed by the First World War so it was only completed in 1919.

Milkwood trees are common in this area which also boasts sections of fynbos. The area offers some good birding opportunities.
