The Wildebeest's Review of Where to Watch Birds in Southern Africa

"Where to Watch Birds in Southern Africa" was one of the first books of its kind in South Africa. Since then, there have been many books published on birding spots and what you might see there. As a keen birder myself these are the kinds of guides that keep you awake at night as you dream of seeing rare birds in remote locations.

It was written by Berruti and Sinclair who were two well-known people in ornithological circles at the time. The book covers 123 birding locations across southern Africa, from the Cape to Mozambique. Each location gives details of the habitat, directions and, most importantly, the birds to look for. Each location is accompanied by a simple line drawing map. In many cases it also lists a few places of accommodation. A few colour plates of birds are included.

There are sections on birding in general. One of my favourite sections is a checklist of the birds and their statuses for each province as well as references to the locations where you might find them.
