The Mokala National Park was born out of land claims that were successfully lodged against the land covered by Vaalbos National Park. New land was bought in the Wintershoek area in 2005 and the translocation of game from Vaalbos was started.
The park gets its name from the Camel Thorn tree (Acacia erioloba) which is known as the "Mokala" in the local Tswana language.
Overnight visitors can stay in one of a variety bungalows and self-catering units. There is a restaurant at Mosu Lodge which serves a variety of meals. There are picnic sites available as well.
The park covers an area of 19,611 hectares and is home to a variety of game including Black and White Rhino, Roan Antelope, Cape Buffalo, Tsessebe, Giraffe, Gemsbok, Eland and more. Birders will enjoy a Kalahari and Karoo species.
Visitors to the Mokala National Park should be aware that normal sedan cars cannot access all areas of the park as some roads are only accessible by 4x4's or vehicles with high ground clearance.
